Playtesting "A Penguin's Tale" with ChatGPT-4: Part 01 - Data & Character Creation
FEEDING THE AI
Hey everyone, today I'll use the "ChatGPT-4" to simulate the creation of a character in my game. I'll write the used prompts, so you can try it as well, and its responses. First, I started as such:
"Act as a expert TTRPG player and writer, learn the following game and wait for instructions:"
Then, I provided all my game manual in two parts, one from the beginning of page 01 (cover) to the end of page 15 (tips). Then, added the following prompt:
These are the lists from the game, you shall use them when I ask you to:
And so I provided the lists describing the meaning of each card in our game, from the beginning of page 16 (List 01: SETTING/ENVIRONMENT) to the end of the page 22 (List 04: ACTIONS).
With that, the AI seems ready to simulate a play-through.
CHARACTER CREATION
Now I provided the following prompt, trying to give it clear instructions in how to use and how to retrieve the correct information from the manual provided earlier:
Now, I want you to simulate the creation of a character, as explained at "ACT I: THE BEGINNING" of the manual from "A Penguin's Tale":
"During the first act, players will use the initially separated cards to create the penguin's personality. The first card represents a quality, the second a flaw, and the third will address their motivation for living the adventure they will tell. Players can optionally use the fourth card, which is explained later. At any point in the game, in any of the acts, players have the option to draw a card from the ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS deck and add it to the context that is being narrated. Now that the character is a bit more complete, players can proceed to the next phase. It is recommended that players also think of a name for their penguin. Here are some suggestions: Waddles, Pebbles, Squawk, Flipper, Bubbles, Aurora, Blizzard, Iceberg, Pebbles, Puddles, Rocky, Frost, Icy, Snowball, Skipper, Splash, Tux, Winter, Yuki."
Write it in topics, give it a name, using the random draw cards as explained at "PREPARATION":
"Draw four random cards from the deck and place them face down in the center of the table. Next, separate the remaining cards into 4 new decks, each of them containing cards of only one suit. CLUBS: define settings/environments; HEARTS: present events; SPADES: add additional elements; DIAMONDS: represent character actions. Each player should draw two cards from each of these decks to form their initial hand. If playing alone, draw three cards from each deck and proceed normally."
Use a card to randomly choose the species of your penguin character, as explained at:
"THE PENGUIN SPECIES To make the experience more immersive, players can choose from or use the fourth card's suit separated in the preparation phase to determine which penguin species their character will be. There are four options: Emperor Penguin: Largest penguin, black and white plumage. Adélie Penguin: Small and agile, black head and tail, white belly, pink feet. Gentoo Penguin: Curious, third-largest, white stripe on head, orange feet. Macaroni Penguin: Playful, yellow crest, found in sub-Antarctic."
Use the descriptions from the lists that I've provided to determine the meaning of each card.
It's answer surprised me, it was almost perfect accordingly with my expectations:
I'll randomly draw four cards for the character creation and penguin species selection. Let's assume I drew the following cards:
5♦️ (Five of Diamonds)
J♠️ (Jack of Spades)
Q♥️ (Queen of Hearts)
2♣️ (Two of Clubs)
Using the fourth card (2♣️) to determine the penguin species, we have an Adélie Penguin (small and agile, black head and tail, white belly, pink feet).
Now let's create the penguin's personality using the first three cards:
Quality (5♦️): The penguin is an excellent fisher, able to catch fish with great precision and speed.
Flaw (J♠️): The penguin is easily distracted by the beauty of the environment, making it vulnerable to potential dangers.
Motivation (Q♥️): The penguin seeks to learn more about its environment and the other species that inhabit it, in hopes of better understanding its place in the Antarctic ecosystem.
Optionally, we can give the penguin a name. I'll choose "Pebbles" for our Adélie Penguin.
Summary:
- Name: Pebbles
- Species: Adélie Penguin
- Quality: Excellent fisher
- Flaw: Easily distracted
- Motivation: Desire to learn more about the environment and other species
The only thing that I would change, that could be done using a more precise prompt, would be to add the manual's name of each card before using it. So I tried the following prompt:
Perfect, write it again adding the manual's name for each card before your use of it at: Quality, Flaw and Motivation
And the answer couldn't fit better in my expectations
Using the drawn cards to create the penguin's personality:
Quality (5♦️ - Dive): Pebbles, the Adélie Penguin, is an excellent fisher, able to dive with great precision and speed to catch fish.
Flaw (J♠️ - The Lazy Seal): Pebbles is easily distracted by the beauty of the environment and the presence of other animals, like the lazy seal, making it vulnerable to potential dangers.
Motivation (Q♥️ - The Scientific Expedition): Pebbles seeks to learn more about its environment and the other species that inhabit it by participating in a scientific expedition, in hopes of better understanding its place in the Antarctic ecosystem.
Summary:
- Name: Pebbles
- Species: Adélie Penguin
- Quality: Excellent diver and fisher
- Flaw: Easily distracted by the environment and other animals
-Motivation: Desire to learn more about the environment and other species through a scientific expedition
Tomorrow, or maybe later, I'll use it to complete a full playthrough. I love to use the ChatGPT to as a "playtester" companion, I'm a little introverted and don't have many people available to be testing my creations enough, but with the assistance of the AI - I'm being able to improve my creations and find errors on it much faster than if I needed to wait the availability of others. So, hope you find this cool as I did! See you soon in my next post!
